Important News from ELL
July 15, 2010
Well, ELL has began and so have all the wisecracker 7-12 year olds, with their jokes. Did that sentence make sense? I will go with it. So far, we have celebrated Michelle Obama and Pirates… a good list so far, no doubt. We’ve worked on paragraphs, quotations, spelling (of course), and COUNTLESS other things. Hooks have been involved, as well as pirate teams (my team is the Shiver Our Timbers. Can anyone beat that name? No. no, they cannot). In the meantime, some of the interns have been celebrating Bastille day, Norms Restaurant, and Korean Barbeque…. Day. Or just Korean barbeque. We didn’t really necessarily celebrate it, but we ate it, and we ate a lot of it. And it was good. Today’s activity was to make a paragraph about what you may want to bring with you if you had to be on a pirate ship for two or more months. There were more than a few good answers: slushie machines, pretzel making machines, teddy bears, four quarters to exchange for pirates to NOT attack, red bandanas, a chest of gold, and one thousand dollars to spend, just for the hell of it. One of my personal favorites was “a pillow so my elbows wont hurt”. Why not, right? Who wouldn’t need a pillow on a ship? In fact, I need a new pillow RIGHT NOW, so I empathize with that answer. Frank, one of my own “Shiver Our Timbers” members, wouldn’t bring ANYTHING because, as his letter wrote, “pirates stink and are mean and think everything’s theirs”. True point, Frank.
A Post to Skip…

Today’s hot topics in the 826LA office:
1)Russian spies
A) who are they what were they doing here?
i. if you were asked by any country to be a spy, who would say yes to Russia? Aren’t they kind of a non-issue by now?
ii. What was one of the spies doing as a TV anchor for a Spanish language channel? WTF??
2)POGS
A)What in the WORLD are pogs?
i. Pogs, as told by Danny, originated in Hawaii. Pogs stands for Pineapple, Orange, Guava. Apparently the first pogs were bottlecaps and from there they morphed into modern day pogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogs). Pogs…
3) Secret Spelling Bee for Cheaters Codes (clearly this list of topics is NOT in chronological order, as this topic is what got us started on Russian spies).
A) Birte, Danny, and Taylor are on “Post Grammatic”
i. Being secretive as they are, they were passing notes with mysterious initialisms on them (note: did you know that there is a difference between acronyms and initialisms? For example: PITA is an acronym, because you say it as a word, like pita. Or NATO. You say it as a word: Nato. But an INITIALISM is something you say the LETTERS of, NOT as a word. For instance: WTF. You don’t say the word Wtf, as that is not a word. Or TGIF. You do not say Tgif. Once again: not a word).
B) Post Grammatic, and their sneaky ways, seem to think they can out-fundraise the TIGER SHARKS.
i. little do they know, they cannot meet this goal, as the TIGER SHARKS are a force not to be reckoned with. The name might be kind of jokey for now, but watch out world, watch out SPELLING BEE the TIGER SHARKS are totally on the attack….. as soon as we have a team meeting, that is…
ii. Dianna Agron of GLEE is on a team. Watch out dianna, the Sharks can out-fundraise you too!! Well… perhaps not, as you are indeed a celebrity, and celebrities have secretive magical fund-raising powers… but what I am trying to say here is that the Tiger Sharks are on the go.
4) Britney Spears: is anyone in the office completely ANTI brit?
A) Ruby: “I am kind of neutral – I wouldn’t go out of my way to SEE her…”
B) Danny: “that is totally different than being ANTI Britney.”
C) Taylor: “I mean, I wouldn’t go out of my way to prevent her from dying…”
i. Britney Spears clearly should not put herself in mortal danger in or in front of 826LA West.
D) Ruby: “I am more anti-Gaga to be honest.”
E) This part of the outline is not very important. I know.
5)I take that back: this whole entire BLOG is not very important.
A) But at the same time, it at least gives some insight into random conversations had in the office, right?
i. I also realize this blog did not in any way need to be in an outline form.
ii. but it is still SUCH a good form to utilize on occasion.
Eh……….
